  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temp)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 45 drops black gel food color
  • 45 drops orange gel food color

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, cream butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the egg and vanilla until well combined.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually add to the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide dough into two batches; color one batch with cocoa powder and black gel food color, and the other with orange gel food color.
  6. Portion each colored dough into about 12 equal pieces. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  7. Press one piece of black dough together with one piece of orange dough to form a ball; repeat for all dough pieces.
  8. Place on prepared cookie sheets and bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are set.
  9. Cool on the sheet for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
