  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 1–2 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture until just combined.
  5. Spread batter into the prepared pan and bake for 22-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the glaze, brown the butter in a saucepan, then whisk in powdered sugar and maple syrup.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and allow to set before slicing.
